Good controlled diaphragmatic breathing in conjunction with good posture are the basic fundamentals to good controlled singing.

Singers require more water intake than the average person.  Drink plenty of water to keep the vocal chords lubricated.  Remember, the average person needs eight 8 ounce glasses a day.

Dairy products can often be the culprit that causing unwanted phlegm.

If a singer has made a habit of speaking in a voice that is extremely too low (bearing down on the vocal chords), it can cause hoarseness.  By tweaking the voice,  speaking in a higher pitch, (where the comfortable humming pitch of your voice resides) it can assist in remedying the problem of hoarseness.  The only thing that will help rid a singer of hoarseness is vocal rest.  Don't forget, drink lots of water.

Are you plagued with a pitch problem?  Sit at a piano.  Have a pencil handy to use the eraser as a pointing device.  Blindfold yourself and randomly depress keys on the piano with the eraser.  Recreate the tone from the piano by humming.  It's always easier to recreate a tone by humming softly!  Depress the key again and replace the humm with an actual sound like "Bee" or "Nay".
Record each session so you can see just how much progress you are making.

Screaming and hollering is vocal abuse.  Always use your head-voice to project loud tones.

Every singer should have a vocal workout that he or she can adhere to for vocal warm-up purposes. Never sing without warming up physically and vocally.

A group trying to acquire a great vocal blend must take a number of things into consideration.  Articulation of each lyric must be sung precisely;  group must learn to take breaths together - at the same time;  If each person adds a little more air/breathiness to the vocal, the blend will be smoother and more even.  Air takes the individuality out of each voice and creates a smoother blend

Don't sing while someone is teaching parts unless you already know how the part should be delivered. Often, singers start singing before they know what they are supposed to be singing.  Singers can often do a very bad job when it comes to listening!  Listen as the lead person demonstrates the type of vocal treatment that should be applied to the vocal part.  Then try to match the vocal that has been demonstrated as closely as possible.

Studio singers, it is a good thing to demonstrate discipline while working in the studio on a project. Just because the track that you are recording to has stopped, does not mean it is a cue for singers to start laughing and talking, totally disregarding the producers job.  Exercise discipline and self control so that the session can be carried out in a professional and efficient manner.  Producers get tired of saying, "HELLO - can you guys be quiet PLEASE!"  Discipline and self control is paramount!

If you are singing in a group oriented fashion and you hear your voice over everyone else's in the group, YOU ARE SINGING TOO LOUD!  Back That Thang Up!   Strive to blend and learn the techniques that would enable you to do so.

Remember, just because you are a great lead vocalist does not necessarily mean you are a good background vocalist.  Live, background, and lead singing are all separate entities.  If you strive to do all three, learn the how to each of them effectively.
